The Rev Mark Warrick to be minister in charge of St Martin’s Church, Stamford

A vicar who is a familiar face in the area is taking on a new role.

The Rev Mark Warrick, who retired nearly four years ago as Dean of Stamford, will become minister in charge of St Martin’s Church.

The unpaid role will see him provide ministry for the St Martin’s parish area of Stamford, and in St Mary’s Church in the same benefice.

Mark has been attending St Martin’s since the covid lockdowns were eased, and has been gradually leading more and more services alongside other retired members of the clergy.

In his role as minister in charge, he will be carrying out pastoral and mission work, as well as leading Sunday worship and preaching.

Mark will start just in time for the Christmas carol service on December 23, and will take the Christmas morning service.

He said: “Although I was unwell when I retired, I am now fit and well again, and ready to contribute more to the life of the church.

“I am looking forward to working with the churchwardens, administrator, the director of music and the parochial church council, as well as with other clergy, who will still be helping out, to move forward the mission of the church on the south side of Stamford.”

He added that he is already preparing for the Christmas services at his new church, and for meeting members of the congregation and the community as their pastor rather than simply as a fellow worshipper.

“I hope that a way will be found to provide similar pastoral care for St Mary’s soon, and that the two churches will continue to share an office and the services of the organist and choir.”

The churchwardens, Alan and Julie Scott said: “This is an exciting time for St Martin’s church and its congregation.

“After over three years without a full-time minister, we see this as a real opportunity to take St Martin’s forward.

“We already work with Stamford Endowed Schools and we are looking to build on this relationship.

“The congregation is now looking forward to Mark’s licensing on December 18, and his first major service on December 23 at St Martin’s, which will be Nine Lessons and Carols.”

This year the church will also feature specialist lighting.
