Bourne's new Italian takeaway opens and sets May opening for restaurant

It's been a long time coming, but the owners of Bourne's new Italian restaurant and takeaway hope the opening will be worth the wait.

Il Mulino started taking takeaway orders on Wednesday, and are working to an opening date of Sunday, May 16 for their 50-seater restaurant if Covid-19 restrictions allow.

The North Street eatery is a first joint venture between Franco and Anna Juliano, and Altino and Alda Nazeraj who own restaurants in Grantham and Sleaford respectively.

They first started looking for a property in the town more than three years ago and were granted planning permission to convert the former Euro Shop premises in September 2019.

The original opening date of summer 2020 was delayed by the global pandemic, but they have spent the time renovating the former retail unit.

"It was completely empty so we had to do everything from the beginning," said Anna.

"Everything is ready, we just have a little more work to do on our big garden at the back.

"We had been looking for a place in Bourne for maybe more than three years, just because there is no Italian restaurant here and it's not too far from Grantham and Sleaford."

Franco, who set up Juliano's in Grantham more than nine years ago, will be the chef, cooking up a takeaway menu of pizza, pasta and chicken which will be expanded to include fish, seafood and steak dishes when the restaurant opens.

The name Il Mulino, or water mill, pays tribute to the traditional source of the flour, a staple ingredient for pasta and pizza.

"It has taken a long time because of the pandemic situation, but we are very excited for it," Anna added.

"When I posted our opening day on a local Facebook page and in a couple of hours we had 700 likes and 200 comments."
