RAF bomb disposal experts were called to remove a suspected Second World War shell from a police station.

The item was taken to Bourne police station in West Road at about 2.30pm yesterday (Tuesday).

Members of No 5131 (BD) Squadron, based at RAF Wittering, were called to investigate. They declared the item safe at the scene and removed it for disposal. RAF Wittering spokesman Ed Palmer said the danger it posed was so low it would not require a controlled demolition.

He added: “The one thing we would urge the public to do if they should come across a suspicious item is do not touch it, do not move it, and contact police immediately.”

The police station was closed for several hours while the item was investigated. Police have not yet confirmed what the item was.
