Galley: First World War heroes are remembered at poignant remembrance events in Bourne

Bourne came to a standstill as people from all walks of life gathered for the Remembrance Sunday parade.

Veterans and servicemen paraded proudly through the town towards a service and two-minute silence at the war memorial.

Firefighters, police officers, schoolchildren and youth groups were among those to pay their respects on the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. MP Nick Boles also attended the events in Bourne.

The town has gone to huge efforts this year to remember those who fought and died in the war. Tommy silhouettes have been dotted around the town alongside impressive poppy displays and the whole community pulled together for a spectacular exhibition at Bourne Town Hall.

Town councillor Colin Pattison said the response to the centenary events was "overwhelming".

He said: "The support was absolutely amazing. I haven't seen that number of people on the streets of Bourne since our second BRM race day in 2012."

Organisers believe up to 4,000 people were in town for the events on Sunday.

Mr Pattison added: "The town hall exhibition was marvellous. It was emotive and featured some really stirring things.

"People seem to have woken up to what happened and that because of those brave men and women, we really do have our today."

An exhibition of wartime uniforms and artefacts at Baldock's Mill proved popular over the weekend. It will remain open daily from 2-4pm until November 25.
