History was brought to life for more than 6,000 people over the weekend as a village hosted its third Baston in the Blitz 1940s event.

Hosted once again on the Brudenell Playing Fields, the event ran on both Saturday and Sunday and included a variety of Second World War displays.

An exciting new feature of this year’s event was live re-enactments in the display arena.

Elsewhere, there was a static aircraft display including a Hawker Hurricane and model aircraft flying by the Lakeside Model Group.

Entertainment running continuously included a return visit by Paul Casper as George Formbt, as well as the Blitz Dancers and friends.

The shooting range made a return while young and old alike had a go at mine-detecting.

There was vintage amusements and rides, as well as a traditional Punch and Judy Show for the youngsters to enjoy.

But the highlight for organiser Alan Hutchins was a flypast on Saturday by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight’s Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster. It’s unusual to see all three fly over one event although sadly the Spitfire, which was due to pass over again on Sunday had to cancel due to high winds.

Alan said: “The flypast really was amazing - it was a real highlight of an excellent weekend.

“It was a much larger event than in previous years and we hope to keep growing year on year. Of course, the weather helped. It was absolutely superb and we couldn’t have hoped for better.”

Alan was also thrilled with the reaction to the live re-enactments.

He said: “The public were very enthusiastic about the live re-enactments. It was great to see the soldiers in full uniform and have lots of smoke and explosions.

“We had a bumper turnout and the feedback we’ve had so far has been fantastic. I’m really pleased.”
