Stamford Hospital consultant obstetrician put pregnant patient's mind at ease
A Stamford Hospital consultant has won a health hero award.
Dr Rebecca McKay, a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, was given the award of hospital hero for Stamford Hospital during the North West Anglia NHS Trust’s annual Outstanding Achievement Awards.
This award is nominated by the public and Dr McKay was put forward by two patients she looked after in clinic, helping to put them at ease through their individual fertility journey after each had experienced a previous trauma.
One of the nominators said she was terrified about coming in to be seen in early pregnancy after a previous scare.
Dr McKay took time out from a very busy clinic to sit with the anxious mum in a quiet space to make her feel calm and comfortable.
The scan showed a healthy heartbeat and offered the patient peace of mind.
She said: “I don’t think Dr McKay appreciates just how lovely she was to me. I was convinced I was losing my baby and not only did she reassure me, but she showed genuine concern and compassion.
Dr McKay received her award at a ceremony at the Holiday Inn, Peterborough, which was hosted by BBC Radio Cambridgeshire DriveTime presenter Chris Mann.
