Rutland County Council to host workshop in Oakham on the role of a councillor ahead of 2019 election

A workshop about the roles and responsibilities of a county councillor will be held in Rutland to promote interest in next year’s election.

Rutland County Council is inviting members of the public to join the session in the hope of attracting new candidates for the 2019 election when 27 seats will be available.

County council leader Oliver Hemsley (Con) said: “Anyone can be a councillor and it’s important for our local democracy that we have people of all ages and from all backgrounds to represent a wide range of local views."

He added: "Councillors have a unique opportunity to make a real difference to people’s lives.

“Ultimately a councillor’s main role is to represent their ward and the people who live there, so if you care about where you live and want to work on behalf of your community I strongly encourage you to come and find out more.”

Attendants will hear from councillors and speak to officers and directors about council services. The event takes place at the council office in Oakham on Saturday, November 10 with sessions at 10am and 12.30pm. To register email governance@rutland.gov.uk or call 01572 720991.
