Former owner of The Mad Turk opens The Shawarma Bar in Stamford High Street
A well-known chef is continuing to bring traditional Turkish food to Stamford with his latest venture.
Kaz Kazim, former owner of The Mad Turk in St Paul's Street, opened Medish in Stamford High Street in 2018 to sell Mediterranean-influenced foods and hot beverages.
On one evening each week the restaurant served shawarma, a dish of meat cut into thin slices, stacked in a cone-like shape and roasted on a vertical spit.
Following the success of this, the chef made it his mission to transform the premises into a 'Shawarma Bar', offering high-quality kebab-style dishes.
The 51-year-old said: "A shawarma is like an upmarket kebab. The difference is there are no additives.
"It's 90 per cent meat and all the rest is herbs and spices."
As well as shawarma, the business will continue to sell salads and mezzes which were popular in Medish, and to offer vegetarian options such as halloumi burgers and vegetarian iskenders.
The Shawarma Bar will open until 10.30pm and will offer the option to dine in or have a takeaway.
Kaz owned the Mad Turk for eight years, taking on the job of head chef, but put the business up for sale in 2019.
