Each year the choir of the chapel take a summer break leaving time for other singers to perform at the historic venue, an invite which was extended to the Uppingham Choir of St Peter and St Paul.

The chapel, also dedicated to St Peter and St Paul, was rebuilt in 1779 by architect James Stuart following a fire which gutted the original building.

Uppingham’s choir sang at the Sunday morning choral communion service.

It was led by the Rev Susan Blackall and the sermon was given by Rev James Francis, staff chaplain of the Fleet, Royal Navy.

John Wardle, director of music at Uppingham Church, said: “The musical highlight was singing the ‘Introit’ to the service in the ante-chapel.

“It’s a floor below the main chapel.

"The acoustics of the ante-chapel are exceptional and then we processed into the main chapel on the floor above, up an impressive flight of stone steps.”

The choir was accompanied on the organ by Peter Clements, the organist and head of academic music at Uppingham School.

Uppingham Choir has another major booking in the diary to look forward to.

On New Year’s Day, they will sing at both the morning and evening services in Peterborough Cathedral.
