Stamford's St George's Church is given money from Lincolnshire Diocese to increase reach of Church of England

A Stamford church is part of a £2.67 million plan to increase the size of congregations in Lincolnshire.

St George’s Church will use its share of the Church of England funding to set up new places of worship in Stamford and other nearby towns, or revitalise existing ones.

The Rev Martyn Taylor, rector of St George’s Church, said: “I’m very excited that St George’s has been chosen to play its part in growing churches in South Lincolnshire.

“It’s at a very early stage, but in the next five years the Diocese of Lincoln would like to see eight new or revitalised churches in its urban areas.

"These will be led by 'resource churches' such as ours."

A resource church tends to have a large and active congregation already, and tries to introduce more people to join a church, or encourages people back into worship.

"It’s about growing congregations in Lincolnshire’s town centres where they are not as big as the rural areas," The Rev Taylor added.

“This is about St George’s spreading into South Lincolnshire and sharing our experience and expertise to revitalise churches and grow them again.”

The Rev Taylor said he will be recruiting staff to help with St George’s efforts.

In his most recent newsletter to the parish he said: "We are still waiting to advertise roles and fill positions.

"The paper work is being done, we are putting feelers out for staff, but we need to keep praying for the Lord to bring the right workers for the harvest field to both build on the work in Stamford and help us break new ground in other places."

The funding St George’s is receiving will be shared with St Swithan’s in Lincoln and Lincoln Cathedral.

The Rt Rev Christopher Lowson, Bishop of Lincoln, said: “The churches we have chosen as resource churches have the potential to be successful in reaching out to their local communities and we want to spread that success to other areas.”
