Salvation Army in Bourne held drive-in service in Burghley Street Car Park

A church held its first drive-in service to help bring worshippers together.

Around 50 people attended the Salvation Army in Bourne's event, which took place before the tougher measures ‘to stay at home’ were introduced.

The congregation gathered in Burghley Street Car Park last Sunday (March 22), allowing people to keep safe in the confines of their own cars.

Bourne’s Corps Officer, Lt Sarah O’Grady led both the service and songs which were accompanied by pre-recorded music from The Salvation Army Band.

Lt O’Grady said: “The Salvation Army had a long-standing history of leading worship and services out in the open soon after it established and even up until recently.

"However we’ve all got used to doing things inside, especially during the winter.

"This was a lovely reminder of how we used to do things, to capture people’s attention, but we are following the Government guidelines in reducing the risk of spreading coronavirus.

"We wanted people to be safe."

During the service Lt O’Grady reminded the onlookers to share love, generosity, kindness and self-control during this difficult time in helping to protect and serve one another.

One congregation member said: "What a wonderful, uplifting, but emotional service.

"It was lovely to get out and see people that you know, all worshipping in spite of the circumstances.”

However, the charity will not continue with their Church In The Car Park services due to the measures introduced on Monday night telling people to ‘stay at home’.

Instead, The Salvation Army in Bourne are using their Facebook page to keep the church community alive and active.

A weekly service sheet will be posted every Sunday, while the sharing of prayer, scripture and pastoral support will continue via Facebook, email and telephone conversations.
