St Guthlac's Church in Market Deeping to hold special memorial service after lockdown lifted

A church plans to hold a special memorial service for all the people who have died in the area during the coronavirus lockdown once the crisis is over.

St Guthlac's in Market Deeping is also giving families the chance to place a photograph and eulogy about their loved one in the church.

Only immediate family are currently allowed to attend funerals and churches across the country are closed.

Kate Brown, of the ministry team at St Guthlac's, on Church Street, said: “Market Deeping in common with other communities across the UK has lost people to Covid-19 and through other illnesses and accidents during the last few weeks.

“An important part of the grieving process is being able to plan the sort of funeral you feel the family member would have liked. It is also important for family, friends and the wider community to get together to share memories and celebrate the life of the deceased in all its complexity.

“At the moment this is not possible with churches closed and services at the crematorium and gravesides limited to just a few mourners and curtailed in scope.”

She continued: “When the restrictions are lifted St Guthlac’s in Market Deeping will again be open during daylight hours for visitors and for private prayer and we will invite bereaved families to place a framed photograph of their loved one together with a framed copy of the eulogy in the church so that friends and neighbours can come in to pay their respects to those we have lost.

“These will be on display for a couple of weeks following which we plan to hold a memorial service for all those in the community who have died during the lockdown regardless of whether they are church members.”

Families who wish to commemorate their loved ones in this way can contact the parish administrator Lisa Hughes at administrator@stguthlacs.org.uk or 01778 342237).

She will be able to give further details and get back in touch once the team is able to plan ahead for reopening and holding services.
