Community project has more potatoes than it needs

A community project that aims to reduce the amount of food waste that goes to landfill is seeking a home for 10 tonnes of potatoes.

Pay as you feel cafe Second Helpings was set up in Stamford in September with the aim of reducing food waste by providing good wholesome meals.

Recently Second Helpings has been offered 10 tonnes of potatoes due to overproduction on a local farm.

Rather than see them go to waste, George Hetherington, from Second Helpings, has been distributing them to other pay as you feel cafes across the country but he still has hundreds of potatoes that need a home.

The pototoes are available from the cafe in 12.5kg bags or 6kg bags on a pay as you feel basis. Alternatively bring your own bag and take as many as you like.

The aim of the project is not to make a profit so all money made is reinvested into the project.

Since September, the project has saved nearly three tonnes of food, which would have otherwise gone to landfill, and provided about 800 meals - some for those who are struggling and only pay a small amount for food.

Again that is not the aim of the project but an added bonus according to George.

Second Helpings is open every Saturday from midday until 3 pm at the Methodist Church in Barn Hill, Stamford when the cafe is open.

Potatoes can be collected from 11am or at other times by appointment on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.
