Letter of the week: Stamford man raises concerns over Stamford North development

As your recent letters pages have shown, local residents are very concerned about the scale of proposed housing developments in and around Stamford. I believe some housing development is necessary, to maintain a vibrant town centre and provide employment opportunities, and if the developer’s plans include the necessary support for local infrastructure, I see no reason to object.

However, when one looks at the scale of building that has gone on in and around the town over the last few years (and is projected to continue up to and beyond 2036) one begins to question how much more building our fine town can take, without destroying its character and charm.

Stamford, owing to its location, will always be impacted by planning decisions taken by councils on its boarders, and this is even more problematic now that Rutland no longer has a local plan.

Articles regularly appear on your pages about the state of medical provision, pressures on schooling, lack of parking, an over congested road network etc. Locals are raising the alarm bells, but where is our local MP?

His contributions to your paper invariably focus on national matters, ignoring the concerns of those he is supposed to represent: the residents of Grantham and Stamford. I hope that in the future he will be more proactive in pursuing some of the issues that have been raised by his constituents, rather than continue to proffer political sound bites.
