Nene Valley Railway Small Loco Group receives £20,000 to restore Hudswell Clarke steam locomotive
A group of volunteers who are restoring a steam locomotive to its former glory have received a £20,000 boost to their project.
The Small Loco Group at Nene Valley Railway, which is based in Wansford, was awarded the substantial grant by the Association for Industrial Archaeology (AIA).
It will all go towards its work on Hudswell Clarke No.1539, also known as 'Derek Crouch'.
Derek Crouch last ran back in 1982 and since then it has been on static display in Wansford.
The volunteers who are restoring it - all rail enthusiasts - hope to have brought Derek back to life by spring 2024, in time for the loco's 100th birthday.
The Association of Industrial Archaeology is the national society for industrial heritage. It has supported the study, preservation and presentation of industrial heritage in Britain since 1973.
Donations have also been made through a crowdfunding page.
