Ministry of Defence and the Prince’s Foundation to hold meetings on development of Officers’ Mess site at St George's Barracks in North Luffenham
The Rutland community will be consulted on what they believe should be built at St George's Barracks.
The Ministry of Defence and the Prince’s Foundation, which was set up by King Charles III in 1986, will host an informal workshop to discuss development ideas for the Officers’ Mess site at in North Luffenham.
It is a four-hectare site adjacent to St George's Barracks, which is due to be sold in 2026 after the army leaves.
The Ministry of Defence believes the mess site has the potential for up to 100 new homes, and that a high quality build and design will set a benchmark for future development on St George’s Barracks.
A workshop will be open on November 22 and 23 for community representatives, who have been invited.
Residents can attend a community drop-in session on Tuesday (November 22) between 5.30pm to 8pm at Edith Weston Village Hall.
A feedback session early next year will be used to update the community and report on the ideas discussed at the workshop.
This first stage of consultation will be followed by further community engagement next year as the proposals are progressed.
James Ryley from the MOD said: ‘This is a really exciting opportunity for us to bring the Officers’ Mess site into the community, opening up access, creating jobs and delivering new homes.
"We are looking forward to listening to ideas from local residents and shaping proposals that complement the village.
"This is the first step of our consultation with more opportunities to get involved next year.’
The MOD is looking to submit an outline planning application next year.
Rutland County Council previously turned down £29.4m to support the development of 2,245 homes at the St George's Barracks site.
Since then the county council voted to scrap its draft Local Plan after six years of work and costs of £1.2m.
The redevelopment of the barracks as a whole is expected to be a long-term project, with a phased development.
As a stand-alone site, the Officers’ Mess will be the initial focus of the plans.
