Drink-driver who crashed in Dowsby spotted trying to get in car in Bourne four hours later

A drink-driver who crashed in Dowsby was spotted four hours later trying to unlock a car in Bourne.

Gvidas Grabauskas (39) was still so drunk that he thought the VW Golf in Abbey Road was his.

He was trying to gain access with the keys from the Ford Focus which he had driven into a ditch in Fen Road at about 8.20pm on May 24.

Police had been called about the crash with a report that the driver was stumbling and appeared to be drunk, Boston Magistrates’ Court heard on Wednesday.

No-one was in the area when they arrived but Grabauskas’s mobile phone and an expensive camera was found in the car.

At almost half past midnight, a 999 call was received about someone fitting his description trying to get into the Golf.

At 1.23am he was traced and arrested.

He blew 73 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath; the legal limit being 35.

Grabauskas, of Stamp End, Lincoln, pleaded guilty to drink-driving and criminal damage to the Golf.

The court heard that he had a previous drink-driving conviction in 2017.

Helen Coney, mitigating, said: “He does regret his actions on the night.

“He thought the second vehicle was his car, which he was trying to get into.

“Both were white and it was simply an error on his part.”

Miss Coney added that the disqualification would have an impact on his work as a self-employed vehicle body repairer.

Grabauskas was banned from driving for 40 months and fined £200.

For the criminal damage he was fined £133.

An order was made for payment of costs of £85 and victim surcharge of £80.
