Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service makes improvements to equality, diversity and inclusion

Issues within a fire service have been addressed after inspectors raised concerns.

Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service was told to improve equality, diversity and inclusion following a visit last year from His Majesty’s Inspector of Fire and Rescue Services.

It was ordered to submit an action plan detailing how it works with its staff and provides feedback in relation to equality, diversity and inclusion issues; the understanding and use of equality impact assessments and if its policies and procedures are inclusive and support those with protected characteristics; and make sure that there is a programme of positive action to support its recruitment.

Between July 29 and August 2, inspectors revisited to review the progress and interview staff.

Their report noted that the areas of concern have been addressed, although more work is needed in recruitment relating to ethnicity and sexual orientation.

Changes made by the service have included new recruitment practices, better communication and clearer processes to report issues.

Lee Freeman, His Majesty’s Inspector of Constabulary, said: “We were pleased to see the significant steps the service has taken in response to the cause of concern we issued.

“We recognise the considerable work that the service has carried out to support these improvements.

“As a result, we now consider this cause of concern to be discharged.

“We will continue to monitor the service’s progress as part of our next scheduled inspection of Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service.

“We look forward to seeing further improvements in those areas identified above that require further work.”

Executive councillor for Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, Lindsey Cawrey (Con), welcomed the result of the reinspection.

She said: “This is a great achievement in an area that is challenging for all fire services across the country.”
