Rutland family take on charity swim for Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie

A young swimmer who likes to raise money for charity enlisted the help of her mum and brother for her latest challenge.

Maria Alam, of Barleythorpe, first started raising money for charity in 2018 when she swam 22 miles to support people with spinal chord injuries.

Last year she and her mum took part in a 2.5km swimathon and raised £300 for good causes.

This month Maria added one more swimmer to her team as she was joined by her mum Olga and brother Michael for her third challenge.

Together they swam 5.4km - the equivalent of 216 lengths of the pool at Catmose Sports Centre in Oakham.

They raised £250 for Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie, which supports patients and their families through a terminal illness.

Olga said: "This year our team acquired a new member. My son Michael joined us in the efforts to raise some serious money.

"Although the official Swimathon event got cancelled due to the pandemic situation, we managed to squeeze in our individual challenges just before the pool got shut down.

"It was hard work but was so worth it knowing how many friends supported us along this journey.

"We would like to thank everyone who has donated for such a noble cause during such hard times."
