'Paper bottles' to be made at farm at Carlby, near Stamford and Bourne

‘Paper bottles’ of water are to be made on a farm in Carlby.

Stamford businessman Scott Nicholas has chosen the site at Glebe Farm, after working with the South Kesteven District Council-owned development company InvestSK.

The 47-year-old, who describes himself as a ‘serial entrepreneur’ says the paper bottles have been in development for a year and this will be their first production facility.

The start-up operation, Supa Water, which stands for Single Use Plastic Alternative, is expected to employ up to 15 people by the middle of next year, after production begins in the New Year.

Scott said he and other business partners could see a gap in the market for a sustainable single use alternative to plastic.

Other paper bottles exist, but they have some plastic in them, such as around the top, but Scott says his bottles have no plastic whatsoever.

It is made from recycled sugar cane waste and recycled seaweed extract and uses a plant based liner that is 100 per cent home compostable and biodegradable.

By contrast, a third of waste ends up harming the environment.

He said: “Our goal is to create a product that will dissolve away back into the environment without any nasty chemicals, which is the case with some biodegradable plastics.

“It’s an opportunity for some people to make a little change in their living.”

Scott says the company intends selling the bottles of water direct to customers once the plant is operational and then it will find distributors.

Of InvestSK, they approached him and asked if Supa was invested in the rural site.

Scott said he was as he was keen to work in a pleasant, rural location.

“They were really useful people, a professional company.”

He added: “They certainly made life easier.”

Steve Bowyer, CEO of InvestSK, said: “It’s great to see another new company setting up in the district, especially in such an important environmental sector. It’s testament to the strength of the South Kesteven economy and further confirmation of why it’s such a great place to operate a business here.

“We look forward to working with Supa Water Limited to support them in realising their growth ambitions.”

Last month, InvestSK said it was working with employers looking to create 500 jobs in South Kesteven.
