Fundraiser for Breast Cancer Now charity at Eyebrook Wild Bird Feeds, Great Easton, makes stunning total

A small afternoon tea fundraiser to thank a cancer care charity turned into a big deal and raised more than £7,000.

Abigail Rees, who runs Eyebrook Wild Bird Feeds with her sister Fay, held a tea and cake afternoon at their Rectory Farm home, in Great Easton.

Having planned for a small gathering in the garden, and a fundraising target of £1,000, they welcomed more than 300 visitors.

"It was amazing," said Abigail.

"We thought we would have about 50 people in the garden, knock out a few cakes and maybe raise a £1,000, but we sold 296 tickets and more than 3,000 raffle tickets.

"I had a lot of support when I went through treatment for breast cancer two years ago, and they were pleased to support me again with this event."

It has so far raised more than £7,150 for Breast Cancer Now, a charity very close to Abigail's heart.

"They do some amazing work," she said.

"When you are first diagnosed and don't know what's happening, they give you all the information you need, and they offer phone support at all hours of the day.

"They also carry out world-class research so by supporting them, hopefully it will help make the treatment even better for future generations.

"I'm okay now, having constant checks and on medication, but better than I was two years ago."

A hard-working bank of volunteer bakers, recruited from family and friends, created 400 slices of cake, but the biggest fundraiser was the raffle.

Many local businesses donated prizes, including The Sun Inn, Great Easton, Lillyford Mill Jewellery, Ashley Farm Shop, Rutland Water Garden Nursery, and Lotts of Wine.

"We had a fantastic response from local businesses and our customers," Abigail added.

"It was just a great day and we might make it an annual event, but will definitely need a few more volunteers if we do!"
