Bourne and The Deepings launch Look For A Book scheme to promote reading
A new craze to promote reading is sweeping across Bourne and The Deepings.
Look For A Book encourages people to hide books around the towns for others to find and enjoy.
It was set up by Bourne mums Gemma Humphrey and Dani Knutton who were inspired by similar schemes running elsewhere in the country.
They are encouraging children to hide books in a sealed plastic bag with a note explaining the idea. They can then be read and re-hidden for someone else to find.
Gemma, who is mum to 21-month-old Millen, said: "It’s a really nice idea to inspire children to read and to get them outside in the fresh air hiding and hunting for books.
"It has really taken off, especially in Bourne where our Facebook group has more than 500 members."
Gemma added: “I want to encourage families to read together so we’re asking people to share recommendations for books or ideas to encourage reading.”
Dani Knutton is helping to run the Facebook groups and has been busy hiding books with her son Zachary.
She said: "I’m very proud of our town for coming together and sharing this experience with everyone. It shows a great sense of community.
"It's a great way to make reading a fun experience for children."
The scheme is aimed at children of all ages from toddlers to teenagers.
Bakkavor and Headstart Day Nursery are supporting it by providing books to be hidden.
Nursery manager Tracy Dixon said: "It's an amazing idea and we're 100 per cent behind it.
"We are massive fans of literacy so the children were really excited when we told them about it.
"We went out on a walk to hide some books and there was lots of excited chatter about who might find them."
