Bourne fire crew visit Bourne Abbey Primary Academy for Great Fire of London history lesson

Firefighters made a special trip to a primary school to light up a dramatic event in history for pupils.

A crew from Bourne Fire Station visited Bourne Abbey Primary Academy to help illustrate pupils latest topic - London’s Burning…Fetch the Engines.

A fire engine was driven onto the key stage 2 playground to set fire to the cardboard houses made by Year 2 children which replicated those that lined the streets during the Great Fire of London in 1666.

It took just one or two sparks and away to spread the fire across the city of cardboard as the wind helped the blaze move quickly from house to house, just like in 1666.

Yet unlike back then, the fire brigade were on hand to quickly hose down the fire into a pile of ash.

Bourne Abbey Year 2 leader Miss Schaffer said: “It was amazing for the children and staff to witness such a spectacular sight and it really brought to life all the learning we have been doing over the past few weeks.

"It has been an amazing topic and I have a feeling it will be a little while before this impressive event is forgotten.

"Our topic really did end in a vision of flames, fascination and fun!”
