Stamford chip shop and bakery receive low food hygiene ratings

A chip shop and a bakery are improving their food hygiene standards after receiving low ratings by inspectors.

Sid's Golden Chippie in Sterling Road, Stamford was given a 1-star rating by South Kesteven District Council food hygiene inspectors.

They found major improvements were needed to the 'management of food safety' which ensures food served is safe to eat, that staff know about food safety, and that standards will be maintained in future.

Inspectors also said improvements were needed in the handling of food and in the cleanliness and condition of the building.

Asker's Bakery in King's Mill Lane received a 2-star rating.

The report said the bakery required improvement to the hygienic handling of food during preparation and storage, and in the cleanliness and condition of the bakery.

Kerry Asker, partner for the bakery, said: “We lost a star because of not having our pest control book here, and another for not having the food hygiene book available. We also had a freshly opened tin of tomatoes in the fridge which should have been in a sealed plastic container.

"Unfortunately we will never achieve a 5-star rating because our building is 300 years old."

The bakery supplies the Asker's shop in Red Lion Street with bread and cakes, and also supplies hotels and post offices.

Sid's Golden Chippie said that they also had an issue with records not being available, but did not wish to comment further.
