Mayor of Market Deeping donates money to William Hildyard, Market Deeping Community Primary School and Dementia Support South Lincs

Former mayor of Market Deeping David Shelton raised £3,000 during his year in office - and has now donated this to good causes.

After seeing the great fundraising work of other mayors and councils, David 'decided to do something to match what they were doing'.

Matthew Baker, headteacher of William Hildyard Church of England Primary School, received £1,000 at the school's morning worship.

The money will support and give aid to children with special needs at the school.

Mark Ratchford, headteacher of Market Deeping Community Primary School, also received £1,000 to support children with special needs.

The primary school has already used this money to enhance its sensory garden - a calming place in which pupils can relax.

David, 75, said: "I wanted the money to go to specific things within Market Deeping itself.

"I decided on the two local primary schools as I have a member of my family who is autistic."

The final £1,000 donation was given to the Market Deeping branch of Dementia Support South Lincs, to help fund their local activities.

The cheque was given to Kate Marshall and Val Pithey at their regular coffee morning at the Deepings Community Centre.

The main source of the funds was the raffle at the mayor’s annual ball, which was held in April.

David, who was mayor from Spring 2018 to Spring this year, said: "The success of this raffle was because of the spectacular prizes generously donated by local businesses."

Substantial prizes, such as time at a beauty retreat, a self-catering holiday to Norfolk and a six-month gym membership were all donated.

David, who is married to Nicky, said: "As mayor and mayoress, we've effectively been selling Market Deeping to the outside world and in doing that we have met some lovely people.

"It has been a pleasure."
