Campaigns join forces to fight plans for a new property in Haddon Road, Stamford, on an open green space which was sold off by Jelson Homes
A protest group has formed to fight new plans to build on one of Stamford's open green spaces.
Ninety-two people have signed a petition asking South Kesteven District Council to refuse planning permission for a new home in Haddon Road.
The plot was sold off by Jelson Homes in 2014 and its new owners have now applied for outline planning permission to build a two-bedroom property.
Protester John Parrish has lived in Haddon Road since 1985.
He said: “We bought this house because it had a green space for our son to play freely. It would be nice to keep that for future generations.
“If the owners get planning permission to build here, it will set a precedent for the other areas. It’s ridiculous.”
Campaigners say the owners from Werrington have already spoilt the view after felling a tree, putting down weed-killer and erecting a fence around the plot.
Mr Parrish added: "The site has been violated. I've found it very distressing."
The planning application, submitted by V and M Bailey and Allum, claims the land has "little amenity value" compared to other green spaces in the area because "it is smaller, less apparent on the street scene and flanked by garaging".
Kevin Edwards owns a property in Haddon Road and was part of the Stamford Open Spaces Campaign set up after the initial sale.
He said: “We approached SKDC at the time and they confirmed the green spaces were supported by planning policy and if any buyers did try to develop them, they would be resisted by the council.
“This needs to be stamped on and SKDC needs to stick to what it originally said and refuse planning permission.”
