Gallery: Visitors enjoy Dr Who themed event at Nene Valley Railway

Cybermen and Daleks took over the stations at Nene Valley Railway for the venue's first Dr Who event.

The railway often hosts themed days to broaden its appeal but the sci-fi event on Saturday was a runaway success.

More than double the usual number of visitors turned up to enjoy the action.

Staff handed over the reins to the 15th Cyber Legion Group who brought along their costumes and props to bring the theme to life.

Marketing directo Jerry Thurston said: "It was awesome. Absolutely brilliant.

"We handed over the stations to them and it was amazing. They were extremely clever with that they did."

Visitors enjoyed the usual ride on the steam train alongside all the extra attractions.

Mr Thurston said: "On our themed days we try to put lots of added value without adding anything extra to the ticket prices.

"Lots of people who will come to every event but themed days attract people who may not normally visit us.

"On days like this it becomes a theme park with steam trains."

Staff and volunteers are now turning their thoughts to this weekend and the next big event - Thomas and The Travelling Post Office.

For one weekend only, the Thomas train will be pulling the mail carriages using specialist equipment which allows the post to be dropped off and picked up at the stations without the train stopping.

The event runs tomorrow and Sunday (April 27 and 28) when mail trains will leave Wansford 11.30am, 1.15pm and 3pm.

Tickets cost £8 for children and £16 for adults.
