Rutland Water Junior Parkrun is taken over by rainbows, brownies and guides

Girls from Rutland’s rainbow, brownie and guide groups took over the county’s junior parkrun.

Helping other people is a key part of Guiding’s aims so the event doubled up as a fundraiser for Save The Children.

The girls were sponsored to take part in the 2km course at Rutland Water in the first ever partnership between Rutland’s parkrun and an outside organisation.

A parkrun takeover involves an outside organisation supplying most of the volunteer and encouraging children within their group to take part.

Forty girls and 12 leaders took part.

Brownie leader Nichola Resoli said: “We are very lucky to have such a wonderful team at Rutland Water Junior Parkrun who are so friendly and enthusiastic and help children do their best at this challenge week in week out.

“Parkrun is inclusive, challenging and inspiring - all the things that Girlguiding offers and values. We had to get involved.”

The girls took part in the run on May 12.

Parkrun's co-director Joanna Cadman-Joyce said: "The children that took part were amazing, full of smiles and encouragement for each other.

"The volunteers were incredibly enthusiastic and provided a lot of support not only for their own girls but all the children taking part on the day.

"The atmosphere was really upbeat and motivational."

Rutland Water's Junior Parkrun takes place every Sunday at 9am at Normanton. It is free and open to four to 14-year-olds.
