Tributes paid to selfless councillor Robin Schlich who served Uppingham and Rutland for many years

“The people of Uppingham and Rutland owe him an enormous debt of gratitude and I for one will sadly miss him.”

These were the words of town councillor Peter Rees as he paid tribute to his friend and former colleague Robin Schlich who died on May 13 aged 85.

Robin served on Rutland County Council between 1993 and 2002, and on Uppingham Town Council for many years.

A gifted linguist, he taught at Uppingham School until his retirement.

Coun Rees said: “Robin Schlich was first and foremost a very intelligent man. But over and above that he was an extremely nice man; a man of great honesty and integrity.

“He served both the town and the county selflessly and with distinction.”

Robin’s achievements were said to be many, although he never wanted to take credit for anything himself.

A Liberal Democrat, he fought hard for improved housing and education across the county and would never shy away from important debates on issues he was passionate about.

“For Robin it was all about the collective but his input was immense,” Coun Rees said. “People here have a lot to be grateful to him for.

“His wife had a massive stroke some years ago and he looked after her diligently and with great love. The sad thing is he himself then had a stroke which he succumbed to.”

A family man, Robin has been described as a beloved husband, father and grandfather.

“I cannot speak more highly of him,” added Coun Rees. “He wanted the best for people, and was a dying breed of councillor in many ways with his selflessness.

“I was Labour so we didn’t necessarily see eye to eye all the time but Robin was very understanding of other people’s points of view. He also didn’t suffer fools gladly, which is a tremendous trait, but at the same time he always treated people with respect.

“He was a top councillor and a top man.”

The leader of Rutland County Council, Coun Oliver Hemsley, also paid tribute to Robin.

He said: “I am sad to hear of the passing of Robin Schlich. Mr Schlich was passionate about Rutland.

“He was well respected, and a valued member of the community, and I would like to express my sincerest condolences to his family.”
