Hundreds turn out for start of traditional Boxing Day Hunt in Oakham

The secretary of Cottesmore Hunt has praised the support received from riders and members of the public following the traditional Boxing Day Hunt.

Clare Bell said approximately 87 riders had taken part in the hunt while Market Place and High Street in Oakham were full of people who came out to watch the riders and dogs set off.

"It was a fabulous turnout of both riders and members of the public with hundreds and hundreds of people on the streets," she said.

“The support was fantastic and there was a great atmosphere."

Clare said around £1,000 had been raised for charity For Rutland.

"Last year we raised just under £1,000 so this year was a little more but it's always around this amount.

"We are delighted to support the charity which does such great work."

Clare said after leaving Oakham the hunt had headed out towards Knossington where they spent the day in the area.

"We had an absolutely great day and everything went off really well."

She said a group of about 15 people had staged a peaceful protest against the hunt.
