Oakham grandmother to tackle world's fastest zip wire for the Make A Wish Foundation

A supergran is preparing to whizz through the air on the world’s fastest zip wire for her latest charity caper.

Despite being scared of heights, Lorna Grey always tries to challenge herself and face her fears.

For her 60th birthday she jumped from the Sky Tower in Auckland and five years later she abseiled down the Orbit at London’s Olympic Park.

The 67-year-old said: “I’m terrified of heights but I don’t believe you should be sponsored for anything you feel comfortable with.

"Once people have given you the money, you just have to get on and do it. It feels euphoric once you've done it.”

Lorna, of Glebe Way, Oakham, raises money for the Make A Wish Foundation.

She said: “I’ve done mad things for this charity because I believe in it 2,000 per cent.

"Heights I can’t abide, but a sponsored silence would be worse!”

Lorna will be joined for her latest stunt by husband Allan, fellow Rutland Lions member Pippy Woodley and six friends from Coventry.

They will travel to Penrhyn Quarry in North Wales on September 24.

The zip wire hangs 500 metres above the ground and reaches100mph.

Allan said: “Lorna shamelessly exploits her fear of heights to either enlist others to join her in such escapades, or if not join her, feel grateful they only had to donate half their month’s salary to avoid such a fate!”

Money raised from the challenge will go to the Make A Wish Foundation.

Lorna joined the charity in 2004 when she was recovering from a brain haemorrhage and wanted something to fill her time. She now visits children to plan their wishes.
