Inventor and YouTube star Colin Furze wins the Cuprinol Shed of the Year award
A madcap inventor has won an award for the shed where his wild ideas are brought to life.
Colin Furze claimed the Cuprinol Shed of the Year award in the workshop category.
The former plumber has more than 10 million YouTube followers who are gripped by the videos of his wild inventions.
Some of his most notable projects are the world's longest motorbike at 14.3 metres and a full size recreation of a Star Wards land cruiser.
He triumphed in the workshop category with his timber-framed shed that measures just over five by three metres.
Colin, 40, said: “For many, a shed is an escape and a very personal space. But, living my life through the internet, mine is nearly a public space too.
"My YouTube videos and projects, no matter how large, all come from that little shed and I've resisted making a bigger one or moving into a unit because I know the success of those videos is because it shows everyone can do what I do in a fairly small space.”
Colin is currently keeping followers entertained as he constructs a screw tank which uses giant Archimedes screws to propel itself through difficult terrain like snow and bogs.
Two years ago Colin won the Cuprinol award for the best alternative shed.
He added: “I’m delighted to be the only person in the history of the competition to have two sheds of the year in their garden. It’s a great accolade.
“My dad never let me in his shed. So once I moved into my own house the shed was the first thing I did. The shed is not just a workspace or place of work, it is now an inspiration for the many people that watch my videos to see what can be made in a garden workshop.
“I get a lot of messages from people and parents of children who've been inspired to get making their own creations and even make their own sheds based on mine.”
Head judge Andrew Wilcox said: “This year we’ve been blown away by the imagination and creativity on display from sheddies up and down the country, during these unprecedented times.
“Colin uses his workshop to inspire millions of fans around the world with his extraordinary inventions. He’s engaging a whole new generation with the wonders of engineering and we salute his efforts.”
