Pupils return to Stamford Endowed Schools after 10 weeks of lockdown

Youngsters across three year groups at Stamford Endowed Schools returned to the classroom on Tuesday.

Principal Will Phelan said it was “absolutely brilliant” to welcome the pupils back with the vast majority of those eligible to return arriving for lessons as expected.

Children are said to be returning on a rota basis to ensure their safety, with a total of 73 pupils on the junior school site on the first day back. Online learning is continuing for other year groups.

Mr Whelan said: “It was absolutely brilliant to welcome back the students today. It was extremely calm and orderly, but you could see the energy our Stamfordians and staff gained from being with each other.

“An awful lot of work has been put in to get the site ready for their return, but it convinced me more than ever that school is such a vital core in the lives of our children. We will be working to get as many children as we are allowed back across our schools as swiftly and safely as we can, in line with government guidance.”

There are different entry points and drop-off areas for each year group, and the children stay in their bubbles from the time they arrive on site.

Each group of pupils has its own clearly-marked outdoor play area as well as its own classroom.

Furthermore, cleaning is said to have been “greatly increased”, and handwashing stations have been installed outside each entry point. All staff on site have completed Covid-19 safety training.

Emma Smith, head of Stamford Junior School, said: “It was wonderful to welcome some of our children back to school this morning and they have settled well into the new routine.

“It was so wonderful to see their smiles and hear their animated chatter as they greeted one another after such a long time apart.”
