Stamford Lions Club pays tribute to mayor of Stamford Maxine Couch

A charity group in Stamford has paid tribute to Maxine Couch, the mayor of Stamford, who died on June 25.

She had chosen the Stamford Lions Club to be her charity for the year and had been looking forward to helping the group.

Gill Clarke, club president, said members wished to express their deepest sympathy to Maxine’s family.

They had worked with her many times in the last five years while she was chairman of the town council events committee.

Gill said: “We were delighted to be named by Maxine as her chosen mayor’s charity in 2020. We have always admired her energy and strength to put ideas into action, and we often bounced ideas off each other.

“We will miss Maxine’s driving force at events such as the Stamford Christmas Market, the Halloween Spooktacular and the ever growing Stamford Christmas Lights project.”

The club, which is part of global charity Lions Clubs International, is a small, dedicated group of people who annually volunteer their time and energy to raise money for many local causes.

They hold events throughout the year in town, which are free for the people of Stamford and beyond to attend.

As well as providing a free, weekly ‘talking newspaper’ the club is a regular part of the Stamford Festival in June, and organises the Christmas Tree Festival and Santa’s Grotto in early December, as well as other one-off events.

Gill added: “Maxine will be sadly missed by many but we will continue to work for the town in her memory.”
