St Gilbert’s Primary School pupil from Stamford is running 100km to help Hamerton Zoo

A schoolboy is running 100km around his garden and town to raise money for his favourite zoo.

Luke Warren, who attends St Gilbert’s Primary School in Stamford, is hoping to raise £300 for Hamerton Zoo.

The 10-year-old, who lives with parents Louise and Matt, and twin brother Adam on Empingham Road, wants to raise awareness of the hardships zoos are facing during the coronavirus lockdown.

He said: “I went there for a school trip and have been a few times, it’s great. I love animals too.

“I prefer cycling but I thought running would be more of a challenge.”

Luke began running around his garden on May 1 but has now decided to widen the net to his estate and the Stamford meadows.

He is doing around 3km a day and hopes to have the challenge completed by the end of the month.

Mum Louise said: “Luke learnt last week that Hamerton is really struggling to care for their animals during lockdown. They are reliant on admission fees to cover their £4,000 a day costs in feeding and caring for the animals. He was saddened by this and wanted to help.”

She added: “We’re incredibly proud of him.”
