A151 near Bourne is one of the most dangerous roads in Lincolnshire

A high-risk road has been highlighted as one of the worst routes in Lincolnshire.

Data from the Road Safety Foundation shows the A151 between Spalding and Bourne is a ‘persistently higher risk’ rural route - one of just three roads in Lincolnshire to get this label.

The figures - released by the insurance firm Ageas - show 18 serious and fatal crashes over a stretch of a little more than 13.5 miles between 2017 and 2019. That was up from seven incidents between 2014 and 2016.

Resurfacing was carried out on the A151 near Twenty last summer.

Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership’s John Siddle said: “There has been extensive work carried out on that road in the recent months due to the nature of the road which is like all fen roads and subject to constant movement.

“Some of the work is resurfacing, however, some is more in depth to make sure the subsidence is addressed.”

The partnership has already classed the road as one of its high casualty ‘Red Routes’ - a status it uses to highlight the risk on some of the most dangerous roads in Lincolnshire.

Mr Siddle explained that the partnership is trying to get drivers to take greater care on the A151.

He said: “Looking at our data many of the injury collisions (93 per cent) are driver or rider error with a number of causation factors such as ‘failed to look’, ‘failed to see’, ‘driving too fast for the conditions’ or ‘failed to assess speed or direction of other vehicle’.

“Several areas have been identified for drivers to take more care and signage has been placed to affect that, such as ‘no overtaking’ and extended speed limits where needed.”

The only other ‘persistently higher risk’ roads in the Ageas and Road Safety Foundation figures are the A1028 between Gunby and Ulceby Cross and the A631 between Gainsborough and Market Rasen.

Medium-high risk roads include the A151 from Spalding to Holbeach, the A152 from Surfleet to Donington and the A1101 from Long Sutton to Wisbech.

The A15 from Market Deeping to Sleaford and A52 from Grantham to Boston also fall into this ‘medium-high’ category.
