Maria makes a splash with charity swim




A swimmer raised £434 for charity after swimming the length of the English Channel.

Maria Alam, of Barleythorpe, took on the Aspire Channel Swim 2018 to support people with spinal cord injuries.

The 11-year-old is a big fan of author and comedian David Walliams who swan the channel for charity, so when her mum Olga picked up a leaflet about the challenge, Maria was determined to give it a go.

She swam 22 miles over 12 weeks, sometimes clocking up 110 lengths per session.

The 11-year-old said: “I want to say a big thank you to everyone who supported me.”
