Braunston May Fair returns to packed crowds

A village fair attracted close to 2,000 visitors thanks to its action-packed entertainment programme.

Braunston May Fair is a highlight of the Rutland calendar which draws people from far and wide.

Taking place on bank holiday Monday, the fair included a wide range of entertainment from games and stalls to a dog show, duck race, live music and maypole dancing.

Event spokesman Chris Lovelock said: “The village was as busy as we have ever seen it.

“In 2019, the last time we were able to hold the May fair, we had an estimated 1,600 people join our fun and festivities but this year the figure was more than 1,800.

“The duck national was quacking, and the crowning of the May queen, the procession and the maypole dancing reminded everyone what a village May fair is really all about.

“It’s about people gathering together to wholeheartedly enjoy an event.”

There was also a classic car display, craft stalls in the church, a fun fair, games on the village green and refreshments served in the village

hall.

More than 30 canine competitors took part in the dog show and musical entertainment was provided by Pheobie Key-Warburton, the Cottesmore Military Wives Choir and Freudian Slippers.

The Rutland Morris Men performed twice and even roped in a few bystanders to have a go.

Proceeds from the event are still being counted but they will be split between the village hall, the church and the Somerby branch of Riding for the Disabled.
