Wittering Harriers hold minute's applause in memory of player and RAF aircraftman David Kenwright

Members of Wittering Harriers football team held a minute’s applause in memory of a player and RAF serviceman who died.

Signed balls were also given to the mother and wife of senior aircraftman David Kenwright, whose body was found in the River Welland in Stamford last Monday.

Players all wore black armbands and pink socks - David's lucky colour - for their 5-2 victory over Cardea FC on Saturday (March 14).

A fundraiser saw an impressive £445 raised for the Darby Rimmer MND (Motor Neurone Disease) Foundation, of which David was a patron.

Club chairman Russ Pye said: "It was marvellous and David's family wanted to thank everyone for their support.

"The players all wore pink socks because David always wore them under his kit socks for luck. He got fined every match for wearing them!"

Russ said the club had also retired the number 12 shirt as it was David's number. All of the number 12 kit has been given to his family.

"It's a sad loss for the club and for the community," he added. "He was a bloke who entered a room and had a smile for everybody. He was a wonderful lad."

Tributes had previously been paid to the 34-year-old who was based at RAF Wittering.

Group captain Jo Lincoln, station commander, said: “The thoughts of everyone at RAF Wittering are with SAC Kenwright’s family and friends.

“It is an absolute tragedy that a life with such promise has been taken so soon and all of us are shocked by this sad news.

“He was an exceptionally popular and well-liked member of the station and coming to terms with this terrible loss will not be easy for his loved ones or friends.”

David had been missing since Saturday night, having been last seen leaving the Golden Fleece Pub in Stamford.

A file relating to his death has now been passed to the coroner.
