Rutland and Stamford MP Alicia Kearns calls for tough action against Vladimir Putin after Russia invades Ukraine

Rutland and Melton MP Alicia Kearns has called for a series of action in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Mrs Kearns, a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and National Security Strategy Committee, took to Twitter to urge action, including the blacklisting of all Russian banks and banning the City from servicing all Russian state firms.

She also called for sanctions against Russian president Vladimir Putin, Russian oligarchs, energy and mineral firms, as well as stopping all exports to Russia and the expulsion of oligarchs and Russian agents from the UK.

Mrs Kearns also proposed further measures if sanctions did not have the desired effect.

"If Putin doesn't stop, we should consider cyber strikes on Russian government and state firms within the week," she said.

"Only a hard shock of interventions now has any hope of limiting bloodshed and preserving more of Ukraine.

"We must act in concert with our allies - a concerted, United effort against a war mongerer.

"Our alliances are our greatest strength - now we must stand together."

She said preventing atrocities and saving lives was now key and to ensure urgent humanitarian supplies such as medicine and food reached Ukraine.

Gareth Davies, MP for Stamford and Grantham, also reacted to the unfolding crisis.

"The pictures we are seeing from Ukraine today make Vladimir Putin’s ambitions clear - a land war in Europe based on a fabricated pretext which now threatens to undermine a free, democratic ally," he said.

"As the Prime Minister announced yesterday, Britain will provide assistance to Ukraine by supplying defensive weapons and non-lethal aid.

"The Prime Minister is coordinating with G7 leaders to ensure a united front and implementing a series of severe sanctions on the Russian economy.

"We must strike at the production of Russian goods and the movement of money to put pressure on Putin to withdraw."
