Braunston Road in Oakham could see 100 new homes built on a greenfield site if planning permission is granted
Residents have spoken out against plans for a new housing development on the outskirts of Oakham.
Jeakins Weir has published plans to build 100 homes on land north of Braunston Road, just three months after a 62-home development was approved on the opposite side of the road.
More than 160 residents had voiced their concerns about the first scheme, and many have contacted Rutland County Council with similar objections to the latest plan.
Letters submitted to the council highlight people’s fears about increased traffic, the loss of green space, the proximity to electricity pylons and added pressure on services such as schools and healthcare.
A resident of Warn Close said: “I don’t believe after the other Braunston Road development going ahead that this end of town can cope with that much traffic.
“This town was to me beautiful and slowly it is being ruined.”
Another Rutland resident said: “I think it is ridiculous to increase the housing population in the Oakham area again, especially when the area in question is a beautiful reserve for wildlife.
“If you can improve the town first with much-needed amenities, doctors and schools, and include how the traffic and road will be affected, then you can propose more housing.”
The plot of land covers 7.99 hectares. Jeakins Weir is proposing to build up to 100 homes. Thirty per cent of them would be affordable housing.
The development would include open space, play equipment and two ponds to help surface water drainage.
A statement prepared by Marrons Planning, on behalf of Jeakins Weir, says: “Oakham is the main town in Rutland and the most sustainable location for housing development.
“The local economy should benefit from increased footfall and expenditure.”
