‘Novice’ Oakham cattle breeder Jeff is new society president

A cattle breeder and antiques dealer has spoken of his delight after being appointed president of a leading bovine society.

Jeff Dale, 63, who runs Oakham Auction Centre, is the new president of the Midland and Southern Highland ​Cattle Club.

Jeff and his family began keeping cattle eight years ago after seeing a cattle and calf at a show. Since then the Dales have been showing their prized cattle at events around the region.

Jeff said: “The nomination came out of the blue. My daughter Fiona was elected onto the committee as well.

“I was more than chuffed. I didn’t expect it. I’m only a novice really; I’m still learning.”

Jeff, who lives in Wing, already takes his cattle to as many shows as possible, but he now has a busy year ahead of him as president.

“It’s mainly promotion and education,” he said. “It’s promoting the club at as many shows as possible and educating the public about cattle as a whole, rather than just Highland cattle.

“If we can show people how much time and effort goes into producing beef, hopefully it will help the farmers.

“I’m looking forward to it. I’ve got an excuse to go to even more shows.”

Jeff’s cattle have brought him plenty of success in recent years. He won his section at the East of England Show twice, and was also a champion at Rutland County Show.

Jeff is also an Independent member of Rutland County Council in the Oakham north east ward.
