Oakham couple mark a huge 72 years of wedded bliss in their new home
Spire Homes’ longest married couple are celebrating their 72nd wedding anniversary in their new home.
Oakham couple Ken, 94 and Irene Thompson, 91, first met in 1942 at RAF Allington when Ken was an airframe fitter and Irene a NAAFI girl.
They married in 1944, but shortly after Ken was deployed to Bombay and Irene moved to London to care for her mother. They didn’t meet again for more than two years.
The couple, who have three daughters, one son, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren, settled in Wisbech once reunited, where Ken worked in a butchery and Irene in a printing works, before moving to Oakham where they lived in Brooke Road for more than 60 years.
Poor health has recently seen the couple move to a one-bedroomed retirement flat at The Lodge in Oakham, which is run by Spire Homes, a member of the Longhurst Group.
Irene said: “We have had a great 72 years together and had a lovely big family celebration for our anniversary and hopefully there’s more to come.”
