The Rutland Osprey Project provides learning opportunities for young people

A supermarket has donated £2,000 towards a wildlife education programme.

The Rutland Osprey Project received the money from Tesco in Oakham to deliver sessions at six primary schools in the county.

The osprey team will visit the two schools in Cottesmore plus pupils in Exton, North Luffenham, Great Casterton and Empingham to talk about the birds.

The children will also visit the nature reserve at Lyndon.

Osprey education officer Jackie Murray said: “We are thrilled to have this opportunity to work with six schools who have previously had little or no contact with the Rutland Osprey Project or Rutland Water nature reserve.”

The osprey team are also hosting a simmer school programme for youngsters with a keen interest in nature.

Young people aged eight to 16 can apply for a place on the programme which includes a full day of activities at Rutland Water.

The successful applicants will learn how to ring birds and identify them from sight, sound and feathers. They will also spend time in the bird hides.

The programme will take place in July and August.
