The tradition of ringing the pancake bell at Priory Church of St James in Deeping St James and St Guthlac's Church in Market Deeping is revived
A centuries-old tradition involving bells and pancakes has been revived.
The pancake bell was rung by Hilary Gentle at the Priory Church of St James in Deeping St James and Keith Brown at St Guthlac's Church in Market Deeping to mark Shrove Tuesday yesterday (February 25).
In medieval times, a bell was rung on Shrove Tuesday to call parishioners to confess their sins and were then served pancakes by the months.
The bell calling them to the service became known as the pancake bell and the tradition was carried on throughout the centuries.
For 40 years after the First World War, Market Deeping resident Horace Day would toll the pancake bell but the tradition had lapsed in recent years until yesterday.
Coun Judy Stevens said: "In world of virtual experiences, it is gratifying to resurrect a tradition that is tangible and can be heard!
"It is this kind of experience that can help to bind an increasingly diverse community together."
