Stamford campaigners win fight to protect green space from housing plan

Campaigners are delighted to hear the council has thrown out plans to build on one of Stamford's green spaces.

Haddon Road residents united against plans to build a two-bedroom house on a privately owned plot of land in their street.

It was sold off by Jelson Homes in 2014 along with other green spaces around the town.

Niney-two people signed a petition calling for South Kesteven District Council to reject the plans fearing it would set a precedent for similar schemes across Stamford.

The council refused planning permission this week.

Campaigner John Parrish, of Haddon Road, said: "I'm grateful to SKDC for making the right decision. It's ridiculous to fill in areas like this with housing.

"We just hope the owners don't appeal against the decision."

The council said the proposal "would result in adverse impact upon the character and quality of the area through the loss of openness and symmetry, which also contribute towards the amenity of surrounding occupants through providing a high quality living environment".

Stamford Town Council has promised to look into legislation to protect other green spaces in the town.
