Pippa Funnell wins her second Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials at Burghley House near Stamford ahead of British Piggy French and Oliver Townend

Pippa Funnell was today crowned the winner of her second Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials but said the win was "not in the style I wanted".

Funnell, who last won the competition in 2003, today rode MGH Grafton Street to victory, leading all the way through the competition.

There was a sharp intake of breath in the showjumping arena as the duo knocked down a fence, knowing they couldn't afford to lose another - but thankfully they didn't and the crowd roared with applause as they finished the demanding course.

Piggy French, who won the Badminton Horse Trials earlier this year but has never won Burghley, finished second, with Oliver Townend - last year's second place and 2017's winner, finishing in third.

"It's been a long time since I've gone here with those sort of nerves but I'm so thrilled," Pippa Funnell, 50, told BBC presenter Clare Balding. "If I think of the length to win a big championship, I never thought it would take 14 years to win a big one since my last one" she said as she broke down in tears.

Pippa Funnell received her trophy from The Countess of Wessex - and the prize money of £95,000.

Piggy said of Pippa: "Such a legend and no-body deserves this more. She's my hero."

Next year's event will run for five days.
