Travellers used former Cummins site in Barnack Road Stamford

Travellers pitched up overnight in Stamford while they fixed an electrical problem on their vehicle.

Ten caravans arrived at the former Cummins site in Barnack Road, Stamford, on Friday evening (November 29)

Inspector Rachel Blackwell said police officers spoke to some of the group shortly after they arrived and were told an electrical problem had caused problems with their lights.

The group insisted to police they only planned to stay one night and when police returned at 4.15pm on Saturday, they had moved on and restored the site.

South Kesteven District Council bought the Barnack Road site for £7.5m about a year ago and it plans to turn it into housing and business development.

A spokesman for the council said the site has 24-hour CCTV monitoring and security measures have been increased following the break-in to prevent any further incidents.

The car park to the front of the 15-acre site has been earmarked for visitors taking part in the Santa Fun Run at Burghley Park on Sunday.
