Michael Thurlby's Paten and Co pub given permission to put outdoor seating in Crown Street, Stamford
An application to use a road as a ‘beer garden’ has been granted permission by the council.
Michael Thurlby, owner of Paten and Co, successfully applied to Lincolnshire County Council for a café pavement licence and temporary road closure, which allows up to 28 people to sit outside the pub.
Paten and Co, which looks out onto Stamford’s Red Lion Square, will now be able to use Crown Street for additional tables and chairs for the next 12 months.
Michael had said he wanted to improve the look of the street, adding hanging baskets and decorative lighting to make it a tidier and more pleasant environment.
Speaking this week, he said: “With the road closure in place it will make it easier for pedestrians to get between Red Lion Square and Broad Street, and especially wheelchair and mobility scooter users, because they won’t have to run the gauntlet of using Red Lion Street which runs parallel to Crown Street. It’s a gain for the town in that respect.”
Benches to the front of the pub have been moved nearer to the building’s façade to allow people pass using the pavement in Red Lion Square.
Michael’s initial application for 10 tables, made on July 15, was rejected.
