Malcolm Sargent Primary School in Stamford take part in Wear it Pink day

A Think Pink day has raised more than £1,250 for two cancer charities.

Pupils at Malcolm Sargent Primary School in Stamford were encouraged to dress in pink to show support to Louise Downs, a teaching assistant, who has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

On Friday last week (October 27) £750 was raised for Wear it Pink, which funds breast cancer research and care, as well as more than £500 being donated for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Debbie said: “A good friend of mine and a colleague at Malcolm Sargent who is only 45 has just been diagnosed with breast cancer and has to have a double mastectomy.

“We did a virtual assembly talking about why we give money to charity and discussing breast cancer awareness.

“I was really quite touched when speaking to the children.”

Pupils donated funds so that they could dress up in pink and staff held a raffle with prizes donated by parents.

Debbie said: “There was a donation tin in each class and children were asked to bring £1 to wear something pink.

“A lot didn’t want to wear pink and still bought a £1.”

Louise, who has been self-isolating, visited the school in Empingham Road to see the children and enjoy a slice of cake.

Debbie said: “She is over the moon and absolutely thrilled by the support.”

She added: “We have a great Malcolm Sargent community.

“The children and staff make me so proud to be a part of it.”
